Public Exhibitions

Public Exhibitions that have been influenced by Applied Visual Anthropology approaches and media advocacy methodologies to reach wider audiences beyond the traditional gallery walls.

This first video is of a timelapse shot by Rory Allen of a public exhibit of a long term project Soft Walls sponsored by Art54 and The City of Cape Town. Soft Walls seeks to deal with convivial relationships between migrated African nationals and South Africans; revealing the subtle ways in which individuals make sense of their experiences; forming relationships and bonds that can challenge dominant perceptions wherein difference is celebrated and prejudices towards “foreign” Africans are perpetuated. Smith’s Soft Walls figuratively investigates the subtle ways in which African nationals and South Africans, in relationships, make sense of their space, experiences and complexities. Smith was the first recipient of the Gisèle Wulfsohn Mentorship in Photography at the Market Photo Workshop in association with the family of the late Gisèle Wulfsohn.

This second video shot by Rowan Pybus is of a public exhibit of a long term project Un/Settled sponsored by The Bertha Foundation and hosted in the Company Gardens in Cape Town during the 2019 edition of Infecting The City. The ongoing project explores white South Africans conceptions of belonging in relation to settler colonial histories and the legacies of Apartheid. The installation is now housed near the Silo District of the VnA Waterfront. The work has been exhibited at Photoville in New York, in the Netherlands with World Press Photo and garnered a wide range of responses.
